Monday 17 July

Moturoa

Today we had our first look at the wiki and we looked at the 'bouncy plane' or was that a jump jet????

Tuesday 18 July

Moturoa

We saw a helicopter and Elliott wondered how it managed to stay up in the air!!!!

Wednesday 19 July

Moturoa

Today we brainstormed about the kinds of things that can fly and we grouped them in different ways.

Thursday 20 July

Moturoa

We didn't do much on flight today because we had a STAR reading test and we had sport in the FREEZING COLD. Thanks Mr B. Not! by Miss K

Friday 21 July

Moutere

Technology is moving really fast in your classroom. You are so lucky to have such an enthusiastic teacher.

Sports yesterday was a matter of strategic planning. My game was played in the tropical shelter of your classroom.

Old proverb says 'A rolling stone gathers no moss'. Mr B

Monday 24 July

Moturoa

Today we looked at some excellent short digital movies to get us thinking about what it is like to be on a plane when it is landing and some of the different aircraft that we have never imagined before.

Tuesday 25 July

Moturoa

Most planes can fly at least 10,000 metres high.

By Tyler.

The biggest part of the plane is the fuselage. The smallest parts are the wheels.

Wednesday 26 July

Miss K at Brightwater School

Miss K is at Brightwater School at the ICT Lead Teacher's Meeting. She had a talk with the teachers at Wakefield and they are going to add to our wiki. They are going to the airport on Thursday and they are going to send us some of their photos. That will be way cool!

Thursday 27 July

Moturoa

I am just so impressed with Gloria, Jessica and Maddison who added to our wiki from home. Clever girls. Today we enjoyed watching Dino and Bella have a go with some flying contraptions. Unfortunately they didn't work quite as well as we had hoped. Never mind. Sport was lovely and warm today. Much better than last week.

Friday 28 July

Moturoa

Today we worked collaboratively to form questions to research about Flight. What do you think of this Osprey plane/helicopter. Get your child to tell you about it. It is extra-ordinary. Who could imagine and build something like this?

Monday 31 July

Moturoa

Today we had our first real go at using the wiki to answer the questions we had set ourselves on Friday. Miss K got a heap of really good books from the Nelson library. They will really help us answer our questions. Tomorrow we get to use the laptops again to find out more from the wiki. Mr B is talking about going to the airport in a couple of weeks time so we can see some planes close-up for ourselves. I wonder how Wakefield's trip to the airport went?????? They went us an awesome slideshow. Look for the link to it on the Appleby / Wakefield page.

Tuesday 1 August

Moturoa

Today we had a really good session on digital photography looking at close-ups and an in-depth session to find out answers to our research questions. Miss K put our best photos on our web page. You can see them from the blue link below.

Wednesday 2 August

Moturoa

Today our wiki got a little national recognition as its address was listed on an ICTPD facilitator's blog about innovative learning tools that teachers can use to help children learn. Awesome!

Thursday 3 August

Moturoa

Today Miss K took our wiki on tour and showed it to some teachers at Waimea Intermediate. They were awfully impressed.

Friday 4 August

Moturoa

Today we flew our kites. Susa's was enormous but the string kept on breaking. Lara's was really small but got up really high. Nathan and Dino could run like the wind itself! Some kids want to go home and try another design. Have a look at the photos on our class web page.

Monday 7 August

Moturoa

It was a shame that it rained so hard our plane enthusiast couldn't come to visit. Maybe another day. We enjoyed looking at the kite photos and looking at Wakefield's slideshow. Well done Wakefield.

Tuesday 8 August

Moturoa

We are looking forward to seeing Hayden's model plane tomorrow. Today we explored more of the web sites on Flight while we learnt how to use the flash on our digital cameras.

Wednesday 9 August

Moturoa

Today Hayden brought his remote controlled plane to school and the whole school watched as it soared and swooped low and high over Appleby School grounds. It was awesome. Thanks a lot. It was mint. Have a look at our blog for more photos and even a little video!

Thursday 10 August

Moturoa and Maungatapu

We had a great trip to the airport today. It was a really focussed experience on Flight. We have a better idea now of what the pilot does to control the plane. We will put some more photos telling of our experience on our blog when we get a minute.

Friday 11 August

Moturoa

Today we had ten children away with colds and coughs so the classroom seemed empty. I hope people feel better after the weekend. Today lots of children had the opportunity to make an addition to our wiki. We printed off some of our visit photos and wrote about what we learnt about flight from our trip. That was a bit of a marathon effort but they make a cool classroom display. Come and see them. They look really great. For my homework tonight I taught myself how to add a photo page to the wiki. Clever eh? Did you find it on the home page menu page?

Monday 14 August

Moturoa

Today we thought about how planes fly. We are imagining how we will control our flight paths????

Tuesday 15 August

Moturoa

Today we watched as Maungatapu started to make some models that might fly. It was a glorious day so we finished off our work about saving electricity and switched off the classroom lights and went outside for a fun game of soccer! That last shot at goal and save was spectacular. Well done.

Wednesday 16 August

Moturoa

Today we made a podcast of out trip to the airport. Dino, Gloria and Jackson V made it. You can subscribe to our podcast in ITunes by searching for Appleby Airwaves or look on our school web site and subscribe through there. Just click on the link below to go to ouor podcast page.

Thursday 17 August

Moturoa

Miss K goes to Auckland today to look at Point England School's podcasts. Mrs G from Brightwater School is coming along too. Miss K will text us photos to our classroom email throughout the day so we know we are getting our money's worth!

Friday 18 August

Moturoa

What a day we had yesterday. We learnt a lot about podcasting and ICT. You will see results on our podcast pages in the future. In the meantime enjoy our wiki. Today we did an awesome assembly with Ruby as our technician and Jackson P as our master of ceremonies. We had piano recitals, dances, mimes, a play with models on the OHP and some feedback about Brussel Sprouts. We had it all. Well done, Moturoa. You have earned the weekend.

Monday 21 August

Moturoa

How about that photo! That was taken the very second that the jet broke the sound barrier and made a sonic BOOM. You can actually see it. Today in the classroom we finished off finding answers to all the flight questions we could. We tried to use the phone to find out the answers to some Nelson questions but everyone seemed to be out of the office. We can try again tomorrow.

Tuesday 22 August

Moturoa

Clever Emily rang up after school to find out the answer to her question. Well done. Today we came together to share some of the answers to the questions we had asked. Some children were able to explain how palnes fly very well. Some others are still a little vague about what it is need for a plane to lift off the ground and move about in the air.

Wednesday 23 August

Moturoa

Today we sorted out whether the air pressure is higher or lower under the wing. It is higher under the wing. We found out by reading a book about Flight. Well done Mr B- you were right.

Thursday 24 August

Moturoa

We had Greg Carroll the NZ National ICT Faciliator come to our classroom for a visit today. Mr B took him for a tour of the school and he stayed in the classoom for the afternoon while we found out how to make controlled flight paper darts from our wiki site and took photos ready for creating our own web pages. Very cool. Miss K enjoyed chatting with another computer geek about useful software and ideas for the classroom. Thanks Greg.

Friday 25 August

Moturoa

Mad Hair and Daffodil Day. Miss K will not be with us today but she is going to blog her wild hair!!!!!

Monday 28 August

Moturoa

Today we decided how we wanted our planes to fly- pitch, yaw or roll and then made a dart that would do that. We were astounded by how we were able to control the darts. It is all coming together nicely. We are very clever bunnies. ICT wise we are making fitness cards to motivate younger people but our new server is being out in and we can't use the internet or print anything on the colour photocopier. We hope it will be right tomorrow.

Tuesday 29 August

The new server was put in today. I hope we are clever enough to make it work. It cost heaps!

Wednesday 30 August

Today we got the server going- pretty much anyway! We will have to work hard to show off our darts and cleverly we can control them.

Thursday 31 August

Moturoa

Today is our Flight Expo Day! What an event. There were flying models of all description. In Moturoa we are finishing a summary sheet of our learning hihglights. Today is the last day of our learning about Flight.
